Your food scraps make a difference
At DL Bins, we’re proud to be part of a community that cares deeply about the environment. Every time you bring your full food scrap pail to our yard and swap it for a clean one, you help keep valuable organic material out of the landfill – turning yesterday’s dinner scraps into tomorrow’s nutrient-rich compost. Thank you for being a part of that effort — we truly couldn’t do it without you!
Small items – big problems
To make sure the compost we create is as clean and usable as possible, we need your help keeping contaminants out of your food scraps. These small items may not seem like a big deal when they’re tossed into the bin, but they can cause major headaches once they reach the composting facility. Before you bring in your pail for exchange, please take a moment to make sure the following items are NOT inside:
- Bread tags & bakery twist ties
- Plastic produce/barcode stickers
- Bits of glass, broken jars, or bottles
- Rubber bands, elastics, and strings
- Net produce bags
These items don’t break down – and if they sneak into the compost, they can contaminate an entire batch. That means instead of being spread on gardens and farms, the compost has to be screened or even discarded. A little extra attention at home makes a big impact once it arrives at our partner facility.
Putting food scraps back to work
Speaking of local compost… did you know your food scraps are turned into high-quality finished compost by our friends at Fisher Road Recycling? They turn the organics we collect into beautiful, nutrient-rich finished compost that’s perfect for gardens, lawns, and landscaping projects.
Best of all – that compost is available for purchase right at our yard. So next time you’re dropping off your full food scrap pail, consider picking up a bag (or a truckload!) of compost on your way out. It’s a wonderful way to close the loop by putting your food scraps right back to work in your soil.
Thanks for being part of the solution – together we can keep our compost clean, our soils healthy, and our neighbourhoods growing greener every day!
