Bins and Bad Weather
At DL Bins, we’re all about helping you manage your waste easily and efficiently, even when the weather isn’t cooperating. When you’re using one of our lidless bins for a hohme project, rain and other bad weather can present some unique challenges. But don’t worry – we’ve got some practical tips and advice to help you weather any storm (literally!) and make sure your waste disposal stays smooth, no matter what.
1. Rain Adds Extra Weight to Your Dumpster
When rain fills up a bin, the water collects at the bottom and can make the bin significantly heavier. This extra weight can impact your disposal fees, especially since water-soaked materials like cardboard, wood, and yard debris can hold a surprising amount of moisture. To help with this, you can consider covering the top of your dumpster with a tarp during heavy rain, which reduces water intake and keeps materials drier.
2. Waterlogged Waste Can Make Disposal Trickier
In addition to added weight, rainwater can make certain types of waste trickier to handle. Wet yard debris or soggy cardboard can clump together, making it harder to empty the bin effectively. If rain is on the way, think about setting aside materials that might absorb a lot of water—like paper, cardboard, and yard clippings—and add them later when the skies clear up.
3. Odor Control in Wet Conditions
If your bin contains waste that might start to smell, rain can make odors more noticeable. Wet conditions speed up decomposition, and combined with warmer weather, this can lead to some strong smells. To keep things fresh, simply schedule a prompt pickup with us rather than letting waste linger.
4. Windy Weather Can Scatter Lightweight Waste
Wind and waste bins aren’t always the best match! Windy conditions can pick up lightweight items and send them flying. To prevent waste from blowing around, try putting heavier items on top or add a tarp to weigh down the contents. This way, even if the wind picks up, your waste will stay put, keeping your property (and your neighbors’) clean.
5. Messy Runoff from Rainwater
With lidless bins, there’s always a chance that rainwater will mix with certain waste materials, potentially causing some messy runoff. If you’re disposing of anything that might leak or stain, consider bagging it first to keep everything contained. And if your bin is in an area that might experience pooling, placing some old towels or rags in the bottom can help soak up extra water and reduce mess.
6. Make the Most of Clear Skies
If you’re expecting a string of clear days, take advantage of it! Using your bin on dry days means less water weight and easier management of any items you’re getting rid of. We know you can’t control the weather, but a little planning can go a long way when it comes to making your bin rental as smooth as possible.
